To Kill A Kingdom by Alexandra Christo
"The sight is never anything less than a wonder to them, even after all this time. But I don't look at the lifeless creature turning to foam on my deck. I've seen hundreds of monsters die. Instead I turn to the strange girl I pulled from the ocean."

Blurb pulled from here:
Princess Lira is siren royalty and the most lethal of them all. With the hearts of seventeen princes in her collection, she is revered across the sea. Until a twist of fate forces her to kill one of her own. To punish her daughter, the Sea Queen transforms Lira into the one thing they loathe most--a human. Robbed of her song, Lira has until the winter solstice to deliver Prince Elian’s heart to the Sea Queen and or remain a human forever.
The ocean is the only place Prince Elian calls home, even though he is heir to the most powerful kingdom in the world. Hunting sirens is more than an unsavory hobby--it’s his calling. When he rescues a drowning woman in the ocean, she’s more than what she appears. She promises to help him find the key to destroying all of sirenkind for good--But can he trust her? And just how many deals will Elian have to barter to eliminate mankind’s greatest enemy?

READER BEWARE! This is a very dark YA book. Lots of murder. Lots of gore. People in this book die and kill and question what they believe.
I loved this book. Every twist of it. For a standalone, this is a perfect read. The world is beautiful and full of danger and adventure. I loved the characters. The book reminded me a lot of The Little Mermaid except completely twisted and changed into a mature/realistic/fantasy telling. Of course the book isn't real it just feels more possible because of the actual danger and conflict that is presented.
Read this if you need adventure. If you're looking for a single book read. If you are wanting to sail the high seas and meet impossible danger. Read this if your imagination has been lacking. This book will fill back up your well.
